Formerly known as the Global Visions Festival, Canada’s longest-running non-fiction film festival has evolved in a big way! Over the past 3 years, we’ve begun to realize our goal of being Western Canada’s premiere non-fiction film and arts festival. We’ve developed great partnerships with a multitude of like-minded cultural organizations, bringing Edmontonians the best in non-fiction, music, and documentary filmmaking, while elevating the audience experience every step of the way. And each step in our evolution has been with one goal in mind: To be less exclusive, and more inclusive.

Global Visions was Canada’s longest running documentary film festival. In May 2014, we expanded the festival to 10 days, presenting Edmontonians with the hottest, most talked-about new documentaries from home and abroad. Since 2013, we have presented Exclusive Edmonton Premieres of films such as Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, Hired Gun, Made in Japan, Chasing Ice, How to Survive a Plague, The Act of Killing, Central Park Five, When I Walk, Jodorowsky’s Dune, and Call Me Kuchu, just to name a few. We’ve also added an exciting new Podcast series, filmmaker talks, and thought-provoking panels.

In May of 2015, to reflect the changing face of the festival, we re-branded as NorthwestFest, continuing to bring the best in non-fiction filmmaking, local music, and art of all kinds to Edmonton audiences.

The festival began in 1983 as the Edmonton Learners Centre’s ‘Third World Film Festival’. The centre became the non-profit Global Visions Festival Society in 1998, with the newly re-named Global Visions Film Festival.
