The International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film is not only the biggest German festival for documentary film but also one of the most traditional and important ones on international level.
Founded in 1955 by the club of East German film technicians ("Club der Filmschaffenden der DDR") it started as the first independent film festival in East Germany called the "1st All-German Leipzig Festival of Cultural and Documentary Films." The annual international film festival was established by director Wolfgang Kernicke in 1960.
Since then the festival plays a major role in connecting Western and Eastern Europe and offers a place of exchange for film makers, producers, journalists, distributers, academics and audiences from all over Europe.

Animated Film has been an important part of the festival for the past decades and has its own competition since 1995.
