"Zelal" is an invitation to delve into one of Egypt’s most shuttered regions: the world of psychiatry and “madness”. The film has been shot in two psychiatric hospitals. The hospitals end up becoming the only place patients can conceive of – not because they truly are “crazy” but because they fear the outside world which cast them there. Those who leave often come back, rejected yet again by society. Zelal is a foray into the world of these outcasts and social lepers. Meeting the ordinary madmen and women banished to these mental institutions by Egyptian society is more than just a journey into their shadow world. It forces viewers to put their own preconceptions and interpretations to the test. It is a way to remind ourselves that freedom is precarious in a society that does not tolerate difference.
