Créé au Teatro Real de Madrid, "The Perfect American", le plus récent opéra de Philip Glass, retrace les derniers mois de la vie de Walt Disney (1901-1966), créateur génial de dessin animé à la personnalité aussi ombrageuse que méconnue. Cet opéra en deux actes est adapté du roman controversé de Peter Stephan Jungk décrivant Walt Disney sous un jour peu flatteur. Sous la baguette de Dennis Russel Davis se déploie une partition envoûtante, où le grand baryton basse Christopher Purves incarne avec force toute l’ambiguïté du personnage. Selon Glass, son opéra est "un voyage poétique et tragique. Une sorte de poème sur la quintessence de l’Amérique et une réflexion sur la mort."

First performed at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Philip Glass’s latest opera "The Perfect American" traces the final months in the life of Walt Disney (1901-1966), the brilliant and beloved animator afflicted by private torments and delusions of immortality. This opera in two acts is based on the controversial novel by Peter Jungk, a fictionalized biography that casts Walt Disney in an unflattering light. Under the baton of Dennis Russel Davis, an enchanting score unfolds in which the bass-baritone Christopher Purves powerfully evokes all the ambiguities of the protagonist. According to Glass, his opera is a "poetic and tragic journey, a kind of ode on the quintessence of America and a reflection on death."
