Around 6000 American soldiers have been lost since the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Two wars…and now another frontline is taking shape on its own soil against a new enemy at the very heart of its troupes: suicide.
In 2009, 242 veterans committed suicide. In 2010, there were over 300. Today more soldiers lose their lives to suicide than in battle. As well as those soldiers who choose to end their lives, there are those who have suicidal thoughts and behave to reflect these. Men with alcohol or drug problems causing them to vent their anger against their families.
Today their unrest takes on another dimension: they vaunt their despair and wish to die publicly. Seeking to end their life, they deliberately intimidate their neighbours and provoke the police. Their destructive behaviour has become a real threat to American society.
