Filmée en caméra Digital Vidéo, cette correspondance constitue un échange poétique où chacun met en scène l’œuvre de l’autre. Par exemple, au film de Víctor Erice qui montre un instituteur projetant à ses élèves Où est la maison de mon ami ? de Abbas Kiarostami, le cinéaste iranien répond en filmant un coing, en référence au film du cinéaste espagnol Le Songe de la lumière. Débutée en avril 2005, ces lettres vidéo ont été réalisées en vue de l’exposition consacrée aux deux cinéastes au Centre de Cultura Contemporánia de Barcelone et au Centre Pompidou.

Abbas Kiarostami and Víctor Erice were born a week apart, in June 1940, amidst very different but equally radical political changes: the Iranian Islamic revolution and the end of Francoism, respectively. Both independent filmmakers and both interested in contemporary art and video, and both are filmmakers of childhood. Since 2005 they have corresponded via film, and these ten filmed letters are the subject of Correspondencia Víctor Erice – Abbas Kiarostami, which was screened at their dual retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2008.
