"Hanif, a Muslim casket maker and ritual body washer from Newark, New Jersey, takes it upon himself to mentor two young men in his community: Furquan, a confident 12-year-old who comes from a rough home, and Naz, a 17-year-old running with the wrong crowd. When tragedy strikes the community, Furquan's home life becomes more tempestuous and Naz gets caught up in a serious arrest. Hanif, struggling with the fear that he has failed as a mentor, must insert himself deeper into the lives of the young men. Shot in gorgeous black and white, Zeshawn Ali’s raw and auspicious feature debut is a poetic coming-of-age meditation on the importance of community and passing down generational knowledge through faith, brotherhood and redemption. Together, Hanif, Furquan and Naz take what they’ve learned from each other and establish rich, deeply honest relationships that are powerful to witness unfold."
