Mafrouza est un quartier périphérique d’Alexandrie en Egypte. Caché aux regards, entre des HLM et le port industriel, ses habitants l’ont construit depuis 30 ans sur les vestiges de la nécropole gréco-romaine.
La vie matérielle y est pauvre et difficile. Pourtant ce quartier est un étonnant espace de vitalité et de liberté. Ses habitants ont une incroyable force de vivre, une sorte de folle aptitude au bonheur, qui défie et transforme leurs conditions d’existence.
En rencontrant les gens, en étant avec eux, au plus près, "Mafrouza : Oh la nuit !" nous plonge dans la vie de Mafrouza, et nous donne à partager le temps d’une vraie rencontre qui vient battre en brèche les clichés ou généralisations fréquents sur cette partie du monde, mais qui questionne aussi notre façon de vivre, ici en Europe (ou ailleurs).
Mafrouza is a shantytown built on the site of the ancient necropolis of Alexandria in Egypt. Since thirty years, the inhabitants themselves built their houses often making use of the funeral chambers cut into the rock by the Romans in the 4th. Century B.C.
Mafrouza embodies disaster and catastrophe. Poverty is harsh there. Yet people there are surprisingly alive and free. They have some kind of an incredible strength of life, some kind of a crazy capacity for happiness, that enables them to grin and bear the harshness of the material conditions.
"Mafrouza – Oh Night!" leads us to meet people, to be with them, close to their life and intimacy. By allowing us to share the time of real meeting, the film undermines clichés and generalizations that are frequently stated upon this region of the world. But this discovery also leads us to question the way we ourselves live (in Europe or elsewhere).
